Buffalo Zoo’s New Exotic Birds Exhibit
Have you seen any interesting or exotic birds lately?
We recently visited the Buffalo Zoo after a long hiatus. A new exhibit was added this year called Boomerang Island. A temporary exhibit and only here for the summer, it featured over 300 exotic birds native to the Australian Outback. Birds included were budgies, cockatiels, Princess of Wales parrots, superb parrots and kookaburras. It was a great chance to see these birds up close and hand-feed them as well. This was probably my favorite part of the zoo. Check out some of the photos of these beautiful little birds. It’s over for the season now, but maybe they will bring it back next year.
Exotic birds may seem like they’d make a great pet, but they require a lot of care and commitment. And, do you really want to cage an animal that should be out in the wild flying free? Birds are amazing creatures and do so much for the environment from pollinating plants, to dispersing seeds and helping new plants to grow. There are so many native birds right outside your window if you just take the time to look for them. Enjoy them and entice them to visit your yard by simply adding a bird feeder, birdhouse and water feature. Gardening to attract birds will do wonders as well and is really quite simple.
I will leave you with a video of the beautiful birds at Boomerang Island. As always, keep those feeders filled and Happy Birding! ~ Karen
