Annual Orchid Show at Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens 2018
Join me as I walk you through this year’s Orchid Show at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens.
This post is going out a bit late, but I’d like to share my visit with you to this year’s Orchid Show. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens host many events throughout the year and this year’s Orchid Show was spectacular! In addition to the hundreds of beautiful orchids on display, the botanical gardens houses what I can only guestimate to be, thousands of various plants, trees, bushes and cacti. All of this is contained in 12 greenhouses and a large outdoor area.
Sadly, I do not know the names of the different orchids, but I like to admire them anyway. Sometimes things are beautiful just because- we don’t always need an explanation to appreciate their beauty. Please enjoy…
As you can see, there was a huge variety of orchids at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens Orchid Show. I was amazed at just how many different varieties and colors there were. There were all sizes as well, from large to tiny, and all sizes in-between.
I had an orchid once- it was absolutely beautiful. Orchids require somewhat specialized care and attention. I learned that the best way to water an orchid is with an ice cube. Add one to the top of the soil once a week so you don’t risk overwatering. Orchids need more humidity than most houseplants as well, 50-70 percent is supposed to be ideal. Place them in a south or east-facing window to ensure they get the right amount of light.
The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens are located in South Buffalo, NY. Designed in part by world-renowned Frederick Law Olmsted, this stunning conservatory opened in 1900. The unique design of the building was based upon the famous Crystal Palace in England. At the time it opened, it was the third largest public greenhouse in the United States and the ninth largest in the world- pretty impressive! Because the building is so old, there is constant maintenance and upkeep going on, but they do the best they can to keep it looking good. If you are in Buffalo in the near future, be sure to make this a stop on your “things to do” list. It’s really easy to find as it’s located in a large park.
It’s easy to lose track of time as you stroll through greenhouse after greenhouse. If you plan on visiting, give yourself at least 1-2 hours to see everything. Depending on the time of year, the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens has a variety of exhibits, including Starry Night in the Garden in June (a wine and music event), a Fairy and Gnome House Exhibit in the spring, a Mum Exhibit & 4-H Farm this autumn, the Pointsettia display at Christmastime and a spring flower display at Easter. I am hoping to attend the Hosta show this weekend. Hostas are one of my favorite plants, but as well, the deer love them. There are many more events throughout the year, just check their website: https://www.buffalogardens.com/
I hope you enjoyed the photos and that you are able to visit our amazing botanical gardens some day. If you know anything about orchids or have any tips to share with our readers, please tell us in the comments. I’m sure we can all learn something about these gorgeous flowers. ~ Karen
